1 〔薬の〕 a puff [an advertisement] for a medicine; a description of the virtues of a drug.

●能書きの半分もきく薬はない. No drug is half as good as it says on the puff.

●能書きを並べる enumerate the virtues 《of a medicine》.

2 〔自己吹聴〕 self-advertisement; boasting.

●能書きを並べる dwell (at length) on the merits 《of…》; give a long spiel on the virtues 《of…》.

・べらべらと商品の能書きを並べる go on and on about the merits of one's wares.

●能書きはそれくらいにして本題に入ってください. Stop going on about how wonderful it is and get to the point, please.
